World AIDS Leaders Talk in Terms of Cures, By Ramon Dos Santos

At the 2012 International AIDS Conference, hosted in the United States, researchers and health policy experts discussed the disease in terms of curing it rather than merely preventing or treating it.

This tone marks a shift from recent years, when AIDS experts seemed wary of promising too much or speculating beyond the bounds of what scientific data suggested. One of the biggest hurdles to achieving major progress, according to speakers at the conference, is government willingness to put preventive measures in place as needed.

Another hurdle, ironically, is the progression of medications. As antiretroviral drugs allow people to live longer with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, the opportunities to spread the virus increase. In 1990, fewer than 10 million people worldwide had HIV. In 2010, the count had risen to more than 30 million.

Still, efforts from health organizations around the world aim to fight the disease and improve the lives of those who become infected.

Angolan Delegation Makes Positive Report on Economy By Ramon Dos Santos

At the 13th United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, Angola’s Minister of Commerce reported that the country has outperformed other nations in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis. While many countries saw their economies shrink in the year following the crisis, Angola’s grew by 2.9% in 2009. The country’s net international reserves, a measure of its central bank’s assets versus its obligations, have grown significantly as well, from USD $12.6 billion in 2009 to USD $21.4 billion in 2011. The minister explained that her country’s investments in economic, physical, and social reconstruction have allowed it to maintain growth while continuing its struggle against poverty and hunger.
